Men and women of the 1916 era remembered in Araglin

$

Eamon de Valera, Dan Breen, Sean Moylan, Liam Lynch, Austin Stack, Ernie O’Malley, Mick Fitzgerald and David Kent (brother of Thomas Kent) were intimately acquainted with Araglin and its hinterland.

These were just some of the many high profile Republicans sheltered and sustained by locals during the turbulent years that followed the 1916 Easter Rising.

The full extent of Araglin’s involvement in the War of Independence was outlined by guest speaker, Neil Donovan at last Sunday evening’s series of events marking the centenary of 1916.

Neil, whose father, Con, was a long serving Fianna Fáil councillor, has undertaken detailed research into Araglin’s contribution to Ireland’s fight for freedom.

A capacity crowd attended Neil’s address, which followed the unveiling of a 1916 monument by Araglin native, Lt. Grainne Kenneally. During the course of his presentation, we heard how Irish Volunteers in Araglin were busy drilling prior to 1916 and how they were arrested for these activities.

Under constant surveillance from the authorities, they armed themselves and were confident enough in their ability to carry out the first recorded raid on an RIC barracks in Ireland.

Despite being critically short of arms and ammunition, the Araglin Volunteers established their own Flying Column and were involved in key engagements, most notably the aforementioned raid on Araglin RIC barracks, an attack on British soldiers en route to the Wesleyan Church in Fermoy, the kidnapping of General Lucas, the ambush of Black and Tans near Ballyduff and the burning of Colonel Cook Collis’ mansion located between Araglin and Kilworth.

British forces came very close to wiping out the column when a plane equipped with a machine gun spotted the men following an ambush.

Imprisonment, the harassment of family members and attempts to infiltrate the area with informants failed to curtail the column’s activities. Volunteers not on active service aided by Cumann an mBan members, sheltered those on the run, helped store weapons, intercepted mail, carried messages and facilitated the recovery of Volunteers who got sick or injured. When individuals were imprisoned farming duties were carried out by neighbours.

This is just a flavour of the ground covered by Neil, who spent several months in London researching archival material. While the information, he amassed was vast, he concedes that, more work remains to be done.

Other aspects of last Sunday night’s programme consisted of music, re-enactments, a display of memorabilia, reading of the Proclamation and the rare singing of a song concerning the burning of Col. Cook-Collis’ residence in June 1921 – written by Sean O’Mahony from Lyre, Araglin, the ballad was sung by Michael Lyons Sr.

John Joseph Donovan and Tom Leddy were to the fore in organising the evening. In his acknowledgements, Tom thanked everyone who contributed to or assisted with the commemoration.

All aspects of the event were videoed by Grace McMahon of McMahon Studios in Ballyporeen and it’s expected that a DVD of proceedings will be available shortly.

Vintage and classic cars galore in Kilbehenny

Even though Sunday last brought with it some of the worst weather of the year so far, the Classic Autojumble and Vintage Car Show in Kilbehenny was a huge success, with over a thousand people coming through the village on the day.

More than 150 cars registered for the event and 27 traders and people travelled from near and far. There were some very impressive cars at the show, while the trade shows had everything from wheels and car parts to branded clothing and diecast models.

The event raised €4,100 which was divided between Glenbrohane Community Centre, the Burns Unit, Glenbrohane Parent and Toddler Group and Kilbehenny Tidy Village Group.

Thanks were extended to the Analog Devices ERT team, made up of Tara Murphy, Elaine Egan, Anne-Marie O’Dwyer and Marian Gorey, who collected the money throughout the day.

The event organiser Gary Gallagher, who is originally from Donegal but now living in Glenbrohane, put an awful lot of work into running the event and it all paid off on Sunday.

On the day, two prize cars for the Gerard Murphy Memorial Show in October were also unveiled.

The Murphy family also kindly donated some prizes to the raffle, which was a big hit on the day.

Sean Carroll, the owner of Plasticbags.ie and Dan Dooley’s Ford Centre were the two main sponsors and six trophies were given out on Sunday, with Blue Spillane from Galbally winning the car of the day with his immaculate Ford Escord MK 2.

Due to the success of the event, Kilbehenny Tidy Villages are now going to start putting plans in place for their 1916-2016 Remembrance Garden, which will be completed in time for the commemoration on April 24 which takes place after Sunday Mass.

The Kilbehenny Tidy Village Group would also like to thank Gary Gallagher and his team, community volunteers and everyone who supported the event. All support was much appreciated.

More important equipment has been purchased for the patients of St. Patrick’s Community Hospital, Fermoy.

Credit for this goes to the public and members of the hospital’s fundraising association who remain as active as ever.

Plans are already at an advanced stage for the fourth annual music marathon that will take place in Cheers Bar, Fermoy on Sunday, June 5th.

Local restaurant Enzo’s has been booked to do the barbecue and a brilliant line up of bands will keep the party going throughout the day.

As in previous years, a variety of Fermoy based businesses have got behind the marathon and for this the association are most grateful. Music marathon tickets will go on sale shortly – further details from any fundraising association member.

On the eve of the calendar anniversary of the Easter 1916 Rising, the people of Mitchelstown gathered together on Saturday last to commemorate the centenary of the Rising, which shaped our nation, our people and our history.

Mitchelstown Heritage Society had organised a varied ceremony with history, music, poetry, a formal flag raising ceremony and the declaration of the Proclamation in the grounds of Mitchelstown Leisure Centre in the new Remembrance Garden there.

The guest of honour, who unveiled the beautifully crafted limestone monument was Mitchelstown native, Lieutenant General James Parker, DSM, the retired Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces who served from 1989-1992.

“His presence and that of Lt Mary Doyle, serving Defence Forces’ member, reminded everyone of the town’s historic links to the defence forces and the men of 1914-1923,” Mitchelstown Heritage Society chairman Andrew Dineen said.

Music Generation Young Ambassadors join The Edge for historic performance

A choir of seven Music Generation Young Ambassadors, including two young singers from Cork city, joined U2 guitarist The Edge in making history as they performed live at the Sistine Chapel, Rome, on Saturday, 30 April as part of a conference on regenerative medicine, Cellular Horizons.

Music Generation Cork City participants Claudia Sheehan (Fairhill) and Nicole Alcock (Gurranabraher), both age 14 years, joined young singers from Carlow and Mayo for this momentous occasion – the first ever performance by a contemporary artist at the Vatican venue.

The choir, which was specially formed for the concert, performed a cover of Leonard Cohen’s If It Be Your Will as well as versions of U2 songs Yahweh, Ordinary Love and Walk On, together with The Edge on acoustic guitar and vocals.

Claudia and Nicole, who are students at Terence McSwiney Community College, Hollyhill, take part in Music Generation Cork City’s Sound OUT programmes with tutors Gráinne McHale and Aoibheann Carey-Philpott.

Both young singers were invited to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime event as Music Generation Young Ambassadors – an initiative that offers young musicians valuable opportunities to perform at national and international events each year.

As Young Ambassadors, Claudia and Nicole previously performed at The Ireland Funds’ annual conference in Killarney.

In the weeks leading up to this very special concert, Claudia, Nicole and the five other talented choir members came together to rehearse under the direction of Musical Director and Arranger Dawn Kenny.

Claudia and Nicole shared their response to this amazing experience: “It was a life-changing moment, to sing with The Edge in the Sistine Chapel. The Edge is such an inspiring and brilliant musician and we learned so much from performing with him. We’re really grateful to have had this opportunity and to have met the other singers from other Music Generation programmes in Ireland. The whole experience was like a dream.”

“It was a life-changing moment, to sing with The Edge in the Sistine Chapel.”

Speaking of the performance, Music Generation Cork City Coordinator Kay Taaffe said: “I am extremely proud of Claudia and Nicole who represented Music Generation Cork City with enormous skill and professionalism at such a unique and special event. This is an opportunity that they will remember forever and it would not have been possible without their commitment, or without the support of Music Generation’s partners in Cork City: Cork Education and Training Board, Cork City Council, the HSE, CIT, UCC and Cork City Partnership.”

Principal at Terence McSwiney Community College, Phil O’Flynn said: “Claudia and Nicole are incredible ambassadors for our school, for Music Generation and for all aspiring young singers and musicians in Cork City. To have the chance to perform on an international stage with such a highly-regarded artist is something that most young people could only dream of. We are so grateful that our students have been able to avail of the chance to participate and that they will continue to hone their craft through Music Generation programmes in Cork City over the coming years.”

Music Generation National Director Rosaleen Molloy said: “I would like to congratulate these wonderful young people on their stunning performance. It has been such a privilege for Music Generation to have been invited to be part of this prestigious event together with The Edge – a remarkable opportunity for all seven young musicians to bring their talents to an international stage. Truly they have done both Music Generation and their country proud. We look forward to following their bright musical journeys in the future.”

On the night the choir performed with The Edge to a group of around 200 doctors, researchers and philanthropists who were attending the ‘Third International Conference on the Progress of Regenerative Medicine and its Cultural Impact’ at the Vatican.

Mallow – the premier garden show

When the Mediterranean comes to Cork and gardeners wish to take a short break from their hobby there’s the enjoyable business of garden visiting to indulge in.

Along with garden visiting, there are shows to attend and what better way to spend a whole day out than at the annual Mallow Homes and Garden Show which takes place once again at Mallow Racecourse on the weekend of May 27th to 29th.

This is the only garden show in the country run entirely without sponsorship yet it continues to enlarge and improve a collection of permanent gardens many of which undergo complete makeovers from one year to the next.

Extra attractions this year include a visit (on the Friday only) of well-known personality Dermot O’Neill who will speak on ‘Aspects of Gardening’ during the afternoon.

Once again the show continues to organise free hourly lectures and presentations with Peter Dowdall, flower arranger Teresa O’Brien and Charlie Wilkins plus guided tours on demand, and advice and tips from over fifty of the country’s top specialist growers.

Extra attractions this year include a pet show, vintage car collection, active retirement talks, artisan food market, model boats show and experts from the Taste of North Cork Experience.

1916 GARDEN

The emphasis this year is once again on colour with lots of new and unusual flowering and foliage plants to whet plant-lovers appetites.

A garden devoted to the 1916 Centenary Rising by designer Finbarr O’Neill will be one of the highlights of the show, whilst renowned landscaper Darren Drummond (who created last year’s Frozen Garden and currently curator of the entire event) will be showing visitors how to make and manage gardens in ‘awkward’ spaces!

Designer Larry Lynch moves to a new site at the show which will become home to a display of unusual herbaceous perennials, and Ballyseedy Homes and Garden (new entrants) will be hoping to impress with their eclectic mix of summer bedding, perennials and hanging basket specimens in a specially designed garden.

Dominic Cullinane (who organised the first Mallow Show back in 1999) makes a welcome return and I for one, look forward to seeing what Dominic will undertake at this year’s event!

As usual, ample free parking will be available just outside the venue and a shuttle bus service will operate from Mallow Rail Station during the day.

Full catering is available at the show, along with crèche facilities, toilets and first aid stations. Children are free again this year and whilst the entry goes to €15 there are €10 concessions for seniors.

Come along and enjoy a full day at Mallow Racecourse. See you there!

Jump for Joy raises €25,000 for Pieta House

Thirty-three people took the plunge and participated in the Jump for Joy parachute jump to raise funds for Pieta House on Saturday last.

There was a mixture of nerves and excitement in The Irish Parachute Club in Clonbollogue in Offaly, as participants waited their turn to take that leap of faith.

The Jump for Joy was the brainchild of John and Majella Roche of Londis in Doneraile and the initiative was generously backed by the Londis group as a whole, with a large contingent from Doneraile taking part with others from all over the country.

It was a family affair for the Roches as well, as John, Majella and their four children all took part.

So far, they have raised €25,000 for Pieta House through the Jump for Joy initiative.

As part of their fundraising, the Roche’s held a lottery for a pair of tickets to see Bruce Springsteen, which were won by John Doyle.

“It was a wonderful day and we thank all of the Londis shops and head office for joining us and all of our customers who contributed so generously to our fundraiser,” John Roche said.

Kilfinane bids to host county fleadh

$

Fledgling club Ballyhoura Comhaltas will be bidding to host the Limerick Fleadh Cheoil in 2017 – a move, which if successful, could bring 5,000 people to Kilfinane.

This is a bold move considering Ballyhoura Comhaltas was only set up in August of 2015, but they already have over 100 members and the county administration admires their enthusiasm and drive.

Chairperson of Ballyhoura Comhaltas, Ciara Flanagan, explained that in order to put in a bid to host the event, a town must have 14 venues and 120 volunteers.

Kilfinane ably meets this requirement, while the refurbished Church of Ireland would bring a unique and different venue into the mix.

The group held a public meeting last week, in order to gauge public interest in hosting the Fleadh.

“There was a good representation from the business people and the public. There was a lot of support for the bid.”

“It was all very positive and the businesses want it and everyone is looking forward to the possibility of bringing the 2017 Fleadh Cheoil to Kilfinane,” Ciara told The Avondhu.

Ballyhoura Comhaltas will have to have their proposal in place by the end of August.

Ciara explained that the businesses in the town have been extremely supportive of the Ballyhoura Comhaltas since it was set up, helping them get started on day one.

If the branch is successful in its bid, hosting the Fleadh would be a nice way to give back to these businesses and thank them for their support and help.

How would you fancy freewheeling down Patrick’s Hill in Cork (or say Richmond Hill in Fermoy) and praying that your brakes are going to work.

Take it a step further and realise it’s not on a bike or in car that you are travelling, but in a household bath on wheels!

It’s no wonder then, that a group of lads from the Mitchelstown/Kilbehenny area have named their soapbox ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ for the Red Bull soapbox challenge which they are going to undertake on Sunday in Cork (the event starts at 12 noon).

“The bath came out of our old house at home,” Paddy Dalton – one of the famous four behind the ‘bat’ – told The Avondhu this week as he and the lads (Martin Luddy, John Clifford and Clement Lonergan) were putting the final touches to their prototype on Saturday evening.

Paddy explained that the idea for the bath came from a friend of theirs, Brian Mullins, when the subject was broached six months or so ago.

“She’s almost ready now. We took her for a run down ‘The Locha’ earlier on …”

Yarn bomb to hit Kilworth

A carnival atmosphere, fun and care-free ambience and explosions of colour all set the scene for last year’s ‘Yarn Bomb’ for Kilworth Festival.

Trees, benches, lamp posts and everything in between were covered with wonderfully colourful and inventive knitted creations, as both skilled and novice knitters from all around took on the task of bringing more colour and vibrancy to the village through the fun project.

Now, under the guidance of the talented Laura Hurley, the committee are hoping that this year’s ‘Yarn Bomb’ will be bigger and better than before.

Organisers need knitters, crochet or pom-pom makers to get on board and create square panels of 23cm in any colour and any wool and be part of this brilliant project.

Fermoy Bookshop has also kindly offered a 50% discount on all wool for anyone who quotes Kilworth Yarn Bomb at the checkout and the committee members are truly grateful for this kind of sponsorship, as it will help a lot more people to get involved.

Anyone of any age can get involved and the committee are asking those who work with the elderly within the community to encourage them to get involved, as it is lovely to see people from different generations working together on something like this.

On Sunday, June 26 at 1.30pm, there will be a ‘Knit in the Park’ where everyone is invited to bring needles and enjoy an afternoon of making friends and helping to create panels, which will make Kilworth the most colourful village around. Tea and coffee will also be available on the day.

Kilworth Festival 2016 starts on July 31 and runs until August 7. To keep up to date with news and events, follow the festival page on Facebook, check out the programme of events or contact Fiona on 025-27972.

On Saturday last, more than 120 cyclists (pictured above courtesy of Kay Caplice) from The Avondhu area took to the saddles to raise funds for St Joseph’s Foundation through the Better Life Cycle 2016 Point to Point Challenge.

There were cyclists from local clubs in Kilbehenny, Mitchelstown, Kildorrery, Kilworth, Fermoy and Anglesboro, as well as people from Cork, Tipperary, Offaly and Limerick.

Cyclists opted for the challenging 175km route or the slightly less grueling 100km option, starting and finishing in Spanish Point and taking in the beautiful scenery of County Clare along the way.

The CEO of St Joseph’s Foundation Conor Counihan, was there on Saturday morning to see the cyclists off and he was so grateful to everyone, both cyclists and volunteers for all they are doing for St Joseph’s Foundation.

While the committee have yet to count the proceeds, it is hoped that the cycle will raise over €40,000.
